ModSpace Receives Outstanding Rating for Completion of Housing and Training Facilities at Fort Knox from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

ModSpace completed installation of 12 custom buildings in just 124 days at Fort Knox, KY.

BERWYN, PA.April 27, 2009 - Modular Space Corporation (ModSpace®) and its strategic partner, Alutiiq, LLC, were awarded an overall rating of "outstanding" from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District, for the final performance evaluation of the successful completion of a major installation project at Fort Knox. "Outstanding" is the highest possible rating given for construction project evaluations from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The Fort Knox installation project helped meet the U.S. Army's emergency need to grow its efforts at the post and accommodate almost 1,000 new soldiers. ModSpace and Alutiiq worked closely with the post to design a customized modular solution that would deliver more than 100,000 square feet of temporary space. In 124 days after breaking ground, they provided the post with four two-story barracks, four administrative offices, and six classrooms. As a result, the post has increased its ability to meet housing and training initiatives.

The ModSpace project team achieved an outstanding rating for the Fort Knox project while overcoming many project challenges. "We had significant challenges with the schedule and funding constraints within the budget," says Viril Heinselmann, a project team member with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District. "Through the combined efforts of the project delivery team-including the contractors involved, Alutiiq and ModSpace-as well as the site development subcontractor, we were all able to achieve project success."

The quick installation of the new facilities at Fort Knox has helped the Army attain a "modularity" concept, the new and more effective fighting force recently initiated by the Army. Modular construction helps the military meet its needs in a timely fashion, giving them the flexibility to reconfigure or adapt to different uses in the future.

"We're proud of our continued service to the U.S. Army and of our military installment project at Fort Knox," says Jay Grass, Director of Business Development for ModSpace's Government Services Division, U.S. Army Ret. (Inf.). "It is an honor to receive the outstanding rating for our efforts to accommodate 1,000 new soldiers with first-class housing and training facilities in just 124 days, which is just remarkable. Our speed, experience, and quality execution set our projects apart from any other modular construction company."

The Fort Knox buildings were assembled using factory-built modules. ModSpace provided 144 separate modular units, totaling 118,000 square feet, which were joined to form 12 buildings that were used for barracks, company's operations buildings, and classrooms. All of the construction materials met the Army's force protection codes, including blast-proof windows and doors, progressive collapse capabilities, and the U.S. Green Building Council's standards for a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification requirements to designate an environmentally friendly design.

Each two-story barrack accommodates 250 soldiers. Barrack units include two living quarters with three separate rooms, a central kitchen, and a bathroom in each quarter. Soldiers are able to enjoy newly furnished rooms complete with a computer desk, television stand, dresser, lamps, and a twin-size bed.

A grand opening of the new housing and training facilities was celebrated with a ribbon- cutting ceremony for the new housing and training facilities was attended by Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell and other local dignitaries.

Fort Knox, home of the Army Armor Center and to the U.S. Army Recruiting Command, is located 35 miles from Louisville. Fort Knox encompasses 109,000 acres in three Kentucky counties, and has a population of over 23,000 soldiers, family members, and civilians.

In addition to Fort Knox, ModSpace has completed many other significant projects for the Army, including Fort Stewart, GA; Hunter Army Airfield, Hinesville, GA; Fort Bliss, Texas; Fort Knox, KY; and the Marine Corps Base, Quantico, VA. Today, nearly twenty-thousand soldiers have called these facilities home.
