Modular School Buildings Accelerate Learning Curve

SITUATION

As the people of New Orleans repopulated the once-devastated city, enrollment at KIPP Academy’s Central City Campus surged beyond capacity. The school needed six new classrooms fast to accommodate the new students.

SOLUTION

Three abandoned lots adjacent to the school campus, though in dire condition, were identified as the best location for the expansion. Recognizing the school’s need the city of New Orleans leased the land to KIPP Academy or just $1.

ModSpace completed the site design work to fit six modular classrooms. The distressed land was clean up and reused as an extension of the main school for 180 new students in just 60 days.

Initial site work included the installation of concrete slabs and sidewalks followed by the connection of sewer lines and water meters. The six finished modular classrooms were brought in and linked by decks and canopies and then surrounded by securing fencing. Inside the classrooms white boards, cork boards, new floors, windows, thermostats and restrooms were added.
