Temporary Dressing Rooms
The Sony Centre in downtown Toronto needed new dressing rooms for theatre performers during the renovation of its 50-year-old facility. Unfortunately, the only available space for this facility was a narrow stretch between the existing building and the busy sidewalk. Due to this restrictive space, the complexity of the installation and tight project deadlines, a standard concrete foundation system simply would not work.
Modspace designed, constructed, delivered and installed the building within a very tight time frame. ModSpace’s fast, effective solution allowed the Sony Centre to open and "drop the curtain" and start generating revenue at a time when they thought they would be shut down for construction and renovation.
Modspace worked very closely with The Sony Centre's design team to develop the necessary point loads to handle a highly innovative and complex helical pier foundation system. A steel structural grid was then prepared to accept the modular units.
The 110-foot-long corridors were built using 5-foot-wide units the were shipped and craned adjacent to provide the 12-foot-wide room units to maximize in-plant fabrication. A phase two staircase was added to provide access from the second floor into the main theater. Five dressing rooms that compose most of the second floor layout can accommodate up to 35 performers and include individual mirrors and lighting for hair and make-up. Individual shower stalls and full washrooms are also included within each of the five dressing rooms. The main floor layout includes a ‘Green Room’, wardrobe room as well as a private dressing room.
