River Hospital, located in up-state New York, was running out of office and exam space to meet the growing demands of its community. As a critical access hospital, River Hospital had limited beds for reimbursement. In order to free up more beds for OR and ambulatory surgery patients, the hospital needed a primary care facility to support the services-and it needed it quickly.

MedBuild, a division of Modular Space Corporation, worked closely with River Hospital to develop a plan to expand on an adjacent site. At first, River Hospital explored MedBuild's readily available inventory of medical clinic buildings, which provides a fast turnaround with options for a 1-doc, 2-doc, or 4-doc configuration. When River Hospital realized the design of a modular building was essentially the same as what they could get with conventional construction, it made sense to purchase the building as a permanent clinic alongside the hospital.

Today the River Hospital Clinic stands as a 5,040 sq. ft. modular facility with 12 exam rooms, two procedure rooms, physicians' offices, a waiting room and administrative space. The new River Hospital Clinic houses six doctor providers and will also be used for Post Op care, a Clean Procedure room for stitches and wound care, and OB-GYN treatments.

Choosing the modular solution with MedBuild allowed River Hospital to meet the tight time constraints they were under to expand and keep their doctor group within the hospital system. And although River Hospital ultimately decided to do a design-build solution for their clinic, having pre-designed layouts to choose from took a lot of the guesswork out of their building design needs.

The River Hospital Clinic is now a fully functional clinic with a grand-opening ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for July 7, 2008.
